Quote from http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/sustainability/

What is sustainability?

There is no simple definition of 'sustainability'. It can be an idea, a property of living systems, a manufacturing method or a way of life. In fact, there may be as many definitions of sustainability as there are people trying to define it.
However, most definitions include:

  • living within the limits of what the environment can provide
  • understanding the many interconnections between economy, society and the environment
  • the equal distribution of resources and opportunities.

Sustainable development aims to meet human needs in the present while preserving the environment so that these needs can also be met in the indefinite future.
OEH implements environmental sustainability programs that include actions to:

  • reduce the use of physical resources including water and energy
  • encourage recycling
  • increase the use of renewable resources
  • encourage redesign of production processes and products to eliminate the production of toxic materials
  • protect and restore natural habitats and environments valued for their biodiversity or beauty.

These programs aim to strike the balance between benefits for the environment and society and economic costs - helping to move NSW towards a more sustainable future.

The decisions we make about sustainability in the home can make a real difference to our impact on the environment.

Rural living and the environment

Residential developments in rural areas are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to urban living in NSW.
Rural residential living offers the benefits of a rural lifestyle, while still maintaining access to employment, and social and cultural activities. There are, however, environmental impacts from these developments which must be carefully managed.

How clean (and green) is your rural residential block?

To maintain the healthy environment which people are seeking in choosing a rural lifestyle, it is important that sewage and household wastes are properly managed, waterways are protected, roads and other disturbed areas are well constructed and maintained, and the diversity of habitat provided by any natural areas is protected.

Locals

For those of us living in the Coomba Park area, sustainability is not a new idea. Living adjacent to Wallis Lake means a developed awareness of keeping the lake clean. Everyone collects rainwater and has their own sewage system - transporation, pump-out or biocycle - all of which need regular maintenance.

There is an inbuilt awareness of not using chemicals that can seep into the lake, destroying the oyster industry as well as the other fauna that call this lake home.

The Coomba Sustainable Living Group aims to

  • Find out more from the various information sources - Great Lakes Council in particular
  • Share information within the group and with anyone else who may be interested
  • Save our hard earned money through sustainability
  • Learn about sustainable building so we can share that information with others
  • Be aware of the needs of our planet
  • Generally enjoy these and other items.

There is no fee for belonging just a $5 pa payment for insurance cover.

If you are interested in coming to any of the events that are held, you will be most welcome. You don't have to 'join up', and yes of course you can bring a friend or two.
